Ancient Baobabs. Ancient Herds.
Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania's most underrated safari destinations — a vast landscape of ancient baobab forests, open savanna, and the life-giving Tarangire River. During the dry season (June–October), it hosts the largest elephant concentrations in East Africa.
The park takes its name from the Tarangire River, which flows year-round and acts as a magnet for wildlife during the dry months. Elephant herds of 300 or more are a regular sight, and the park is also renowned for its tree-climbing lions — a rare behaviour seen in only a handful of locations worldwide.
Tarangire is typically included as part of the northern Tanzania circuit alongside the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, but it deserves more time than most itineraries allow. The ancient baobab landscape is unlike anywhere else in Tanzania — otherworldly and deeply photogenic.
Best Time to Visit Tarangire
Tarangire is at its best during the dry season when elephants and other wildlife concentrate along the Tarangire River. It's a year-round destination but the dry months are exceptional.
This is Tarangire at its finest. Elephant herds of hundreds gather along the river. Lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog are all active. The baobab landscape is dramatic against clear blue skies.
November brings the short rains and the park transforms into vivid green. Wildlife disperses but remains abundant. Rates are lower and visitor numbers are reduced.
Over 550 bird species have been recorded in Tarangire — the green season brings migratory species from Europe and Asia. Newborn animals are common and the landscape is lush and beautiful.
What You'll See
Tarangire is famous for its elephants — but the park also supports exceptional populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, and African wild dog. The tree-climbing lions are a unique highlight found in very few places in Africa.
