About Lake Manyara

Tree-Climbing Lions and a Million Flamingos

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania's most diverse and rewarding parks — a compact gem that punches far above its size. The alkaline lake that gives the park its name turns pink with flamingos during the wet season, while the groundwater forest along the escarpment shelters baboons, elephants, and over 400 bird species.

Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions — a rare behaviour seen in only a handful of locations worldwide. The lions of Manyara have developed the habit of resting in the branches of large fig and acacia trees, possibly to escape insects or to gain a better vantage point over the floodplains.

The park is typically visited as a day trip or overnight stop on the northern circuit between Arusha and the Serengeti. Its compact size makes it ideal for a half-day or full-day game drive, and the diversity of habitats — forest, floodplain, and lake — means wildlife sightings are reliably varied.

Flamingos & migratory birds

The lake fills with water and flamingos arrive in huge numbers — sometimes millions. Migratory birds from Europe and Asia are present. The forest is lush and green and elephant sightings are frequent.

The tree-climbing behaviour of Manyara's lions is not fully understood. Theories include escaping biting insects on the ground, gaining a better vantage point over the floodplains, or simply a learned behaviour passed down through specific prides. The behaviour is most commonly observed in the large fig trees near the lake shore.

Lake Manyara is typically visited as a half-day or full-day stop on the northern circuit. One night allows for an early morning game drive and a leisurely afternoon. The park is compact enough to cover thoroughly in a single day, making it ideal as a first or last stop on a longer itinerary.

Yes — Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's premier birdwatching destinations. Over 400 species have been recorded, including flamingo, pelican, stork, kingfisher, and numerous raptors. The diversity of habitats — forest, floodplain, and lake — makes it exceptional for birders of all levels.

Lake Manyara is approximately 2 hours from Arusha by road, making it the most accessible of Tanzania's northern parks. It is typically the first stop on the northern circuit, followed by Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.

Yes — flamingos are present at Lake Manyara year-round, but numbers vary dramatically with the lake level. During the wet season (November–May), the lake fills with water and flamingo numbers can reach into the millions. The sight of the lake turning pink is one of Tanzania's most spectacular natural phenomena.

Beyond game drives, Lake Manyara offers guided walking safaris in the groundwater forest, mountain biking on the escarpment, and canoe safaris on the lake (seasonal). The nearby town of Mto wa Mbu offers cultural visits to local Maasai and farming communities.
