About Ngorongoro

A World Within a World

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — formed when a massive volcano collapsed inward roughly three million years ago. The resulting 260 km² bowl has become one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife sanctuaries, sheltering an estimated 25,000 large animals within its walls.

Unlike the open Serengeti, Ngorongoro's crater walls create a natural enclosure that keeps wildlife concentrated year-round. Lions, elephants, hippos, hyenas, and one of Africa's last populations of black rhino all share this ancient landscape. The alkaline Lake Magadi at the crater floor turns pink with flamingos during the wet season.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area also encompasses the Olduvai Gorge — one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world, where some of the earliest evidence of human ancestors was discovered.

Dry Season (Jun–Oct)
Best game viewing & clear skies

The dry season brings excellent visibility and wildlife concentrates around the crater's water sources. Black rhino sightings are most reliable. Cool mornings and warm afternoons make for comfortable game drives.

Green Season (Nov–May)
Flamingos & lush crater floor

The crater floor transforms into vivid green and Lake Magadi fills with flamingos. Newborn animals are common and the landscape is at its most photogenic. Crater roads can be muddy but are generally passable.

Year-Round
Reliable wildlife all year

Unlike migratory destinations, Ngorongoro's wildlife is resident year-round. The crater walls prevent animals from leaving, making every month productive for game viewing.

Overnight stays on the crater floor are not permitted — all lodges are located on the crater rim. However, full-day crater drives are possible, and the rim lodges offer spectacular views into the caldera. We recommend at least one full day dedicated to the crater floor.

Access to the crater floor is via steep descent roads that require 4WD vehicles. Only registered safari vehicles with licensed guides are permitted on the crater floor. The descent takes approximately 20–30 minutes and the views on the way down are extraordinary.

Black rhino are present year-round in the crater but are most reliably sighted in the early morning and late afternoon. The Lerai Forest area and the open grasslands near the crater floor are the most productive areas. Sightings are never guaranteed but Ngorongoro offers the best rhino viewing in Tanzania.

We recommend 2 nights on the crater rim to allow for one full day on the crater floor plus time to explore the surrounding Conservation Area. Combining Ngorongoro with the Serengeti (2–3 hours away) is the classic northern circuit.

Yes — Ngorongoro is one of Tanzania's most family-friendly destinations. The enclosed crater means wildlife is reliably visible, making it ideal for children who might struggle with longer game drives. The rim lodges are also generally more accessible than remote bush camps.

Absolutely — this is the most popular combination in Tanzania. The two parks are approximately 2–3 hours apart by road, and most northern circuit itineraries include both. A typical combined itinerary runs 7–10 days.
