About Mikumi

Tanzania's Most Accessible Wilderness

Mikumi National Park is Tanzania's fourth largest national park and one of its most accessible — located just 5 hours from Dar es Salaam by road. The park borders the vast Nyerere (Selous) ecosystem to the south, and the wildlife of both areas moves freely across the boundary.

The Mkata River floodplain is the heart of Mikumi — a vast open grassland that supports large populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and wildebeest. The open terrain makes for excellent game viewing, with wildlife visible from considerable distances.

Mikumi is often combined with Ruaha or Nyerere for a complete southern Tanzania circuit. It can also be visited as a standalone destination from Dar es Salaam — making it one of the few parks in Tanzania accessible for a weekend safari.

Mikumi is approximately 5 hours from Dar es Salaam by road — making it one of the most accessible national parks in Tanzania. The drive follows the main highway through the Mikumi corridor, where wildlife is sometimes visible from the road itself.

Yes — Mikumi is one of the few Tanzania national parks accessible for a weekend safari from Dar es Salaam. A 2-night trip allows for two full days of game drives. We recommend departing on Friday afternoon and returning Sunday evening.

Yes — Mikumi is an excellent family destination. The open floodplains make wildlife easy to spot, and the park's accessibility means shorter travel times for children. Several lodges cater specifically to families with children's activities and family rooms.

Mikumi offers a more accessible and affordable safari experience than the Serengeti, with good wildlife viewing on the open floodplains. The Serengeti is larger and offers the Great Migration; Mikumi is better for a quick, accessible safari from Dar es Salaam. Many visitors use Mikumi as an introduction to Tanzania's southern circuit.

Yes — Mikumi is often combined with Ruaha or Nyerere for a complete southern Tanzania circuit. The drive from Mikumi to Ruaha takes approximately 4–5 hours. Alternatively, Mikumi can be combined with Zanzibar for a beach extension.

Game drives are the primary activity in Mikumi. The park also offers guided walking safaris with armed rangers, night drives (from some camps), and birdwatching walks. The Mkata floodplain is particularly good for photography due to the open terrain and good light.
