Tanzania's Most Accessible Wilderness
Mikumi National Park is Tanzania's fourth largest national park and one of its most accessible — located just 5 hours from Dar es Salaam by road. The park borders the vast Nyerere (Selous) ecosystem to the south, and the wildlife of both areas moves freely across the boundary.
The Mkata River floodplain is the heart of Mikumi — a vast open grassland that supports large populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and wildebeest. The open terrain makes for excellent game viewing, with wildlife visible from considerable distances.
Mikumi is often combined with Ruaha or Nyerere for a complete southern Tanzania circuit. It can also be visited as a standalone destination from Dar es Salaam — making it one of the few parks in Tanzania accessible for a weekend safari.
Best Time to Visit Mikumi
Mikumi is a year-round destination. The dry season offers the best game viewing on the open floodplains; the wet season brings lush landscapes and excellent birdwatching.
Wildlife concentrates on the Mkata floodplain and around water sources. Lion, elephant, and buffalo are reliably sighted. The open terrain makes for excellent photography.
The park transforms into vivid green and migratory birds arrive. Wildlife disperses across the park but remains abundant. The Mkata floodplain can flood in heavy rains.
Mikumi's proximity to Dar es Salaam makes it accessible year-round for weekend safaris. The park is open 365 days and the main roads are generally passable in all seasons.
What You'll See
Mikumi's open floodplains support large populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and wildebeest. The park is also home to hippo, crocodile, and over 400 bird species.
