Best Time to Visit Tanzania for a Safari

Tanzania is one of the few places on earth where exceptional wildlife viewing is possible in every single month of the year. But "exceptional" and "extraordinary" are different things — and the right timing can be the difference between a great safari and a once-in-a-lifetime one.

After more than 20 years guiding in Tanzania, our team at Absolute Wilderness has seen every season, every weather pattern, and every variation the ecosystem can produce. Here is our honest, experience-based guide to the best time to visit.

Tanzania's Two Seasons

Tanzania has two distinct seasons that shape the safari experience:

The Dry Season (June – October) is widely considered the best time for wildlife viewing. Vegetation thins out, animals concentrate around permanent water sources, and the roads are at their most accessible. This is peak season — and peak prices.

The Wet Season (November – May) is split into two rainy periods: the short rains (November–December) and the long rains (March–May). January and February are typically dry and warm. The wet season brings lush landscapes, newborn animals, exceptional birdlife, and significantly fewer tourists.

The honest answer is that neither season is "wrong." They are simply different experiences.

Month-by-Month Guide

January – February: Calving Season and Clear Skies

January and February fall between the two rainy seasons and offer some of the best conditions of the year. The southern Serengeti and Ndutu area are the place to be — this is calving season, when approximately 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within a six-week window.

The short grass of the southern plains means visibility is exceptional. Predator activity is at its annual peak. Cheetahs, lions, hyenas, and wild dogs all converge on the calving grounds.

Best for: Calving season, predator action, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire elephants. Crowds: Moderate. Weather: Warm and dry, occasional afternoon showers.

March – May: The Long Rains

The long rains arrive in March and continue through May. This is the low season — some camps close, roads can be challenging, and the Serengeti's famous short-grass plains become difficult to navigate.

But the wet season has its own magic. The landscape transforms into a vivid green. Migratory birds arrive in extraordinary numbers. Newborn animals are everywhere. And with fewer tourists on the road, you often have the bush entirely to yourself.

Best for: Birdwatching, green landscapes, budget-conscious travellers, exclusive experiences. Crowds: Very low. Weather: Warm and wet, heavy afternoon rains.

June – July: The Dry Season Begins

June marks the start of the dry season and the beginning of the migration's move north. The Serengeti's Western Corridor comes alive as the herds cross the Grumeti River — one of Africa's most dramatic wildlife events, and far less crowded than the Mara crossings.

Temperatures cool slightly, vegetation thins, and wildlife concentrates around water. This is when the Serengeti starts to feel truly wild.

Best for: Grumeti River crossings, general wildlife, comfortable temperatures. Crowds: Moderate and building. Weather: Dry and cool, especially at night.

July – October: Peak Season

This is Tanzania's most popular time to visit — and for good reason. The dry season is in full effect, the Mara River crossings are happening in the northern Serengeti, and wildlife viewing across all parks is at its finest.

In the Ngorongoro Crater, the dry season concentrates animals around the crater floor's lakes and rivers. In Tarangire, elephant herds of 200 or more gather around the Tarangire River. In Ruaha, lions and wild dogs are reliably sighted.

Best for: Mara River crossings, all-round wildlife, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Ruaha. Crowds: High, especially July and August. Weather: Dry, warm days, cool nights.

November – December: The Short Rains

The short rains arrive in November — typically brief afternoon showers that green up the landscape without making roads impassable. This is an excellent shoulder season: the wildlife is superb, the landscape is beautiful, and the crowds have thinned significantly.

December is particularly good. The short rains usually ease by mid-December, and the combination of green landscapes, good wildlife, and festive atmosphere makes it a favourite for families.

Best for: Value, green landscapes, birdwatching, family safaris over Christmas. Crowds: Low to moderate. Weather: Warm with afternoon showers, clearing by December.

Best Time by Park

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti rewards visitors year-round, but the experience changes dramatically by season:

  • January–March: Southern Serengeti for calving
  • June–July: Western Corridor for Grumeti crossings
  • July–October: Northern Serengeti for Mara crossings
  • November–December: Central Serengeti for green season wildlife

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is excellent year-round — the crater's unique geography means wildlife is always present. The dry season (June–October) offers the clearest views and the best road conditions. The wet season brings dramatic skies and lush vegetation.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is at its best during the dry season (June–October), when elephant herds of extraordinary size gather around the Tarangire River. In the wet season, many animals disperse into the surrounding ecosystem, but the birdlife is exceptional.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar's best weather is June to October (dry, warm, and sunny) and January to February. The long rains (March–May) bring heavy downpours. Combining a Zanzibar beach extension with a dry-season safari is one of our most popular itineraries.

Our Honest Recommendation

If you can only visit once and want the most dramatic possible experience, July to October is the peak of the dry season and the height of the Mara River crossings. Book 12 to 18 months in advance for the best camps.

If you want exceptional wildlife with fewer crowds and lower prices, January to February is outstanding — calving season in the southern Serengeti is one of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles, and it is significantly less crowded than the Mara crossing season.

If you are flexible and want the best value, June and November are excellent shoulder months with good wildlife, comfortable conditions, and more availability.
